Put Your Heart First

It's is one of the great equalizers, one of the things we all experience in life.

We're talking about stress!

February is American Heart Health Month, and one of the primary factors that deteriorates heart health is unmanaged, chronic stress. Are your stress levels elevated, or are you lacking regular sleep? Are your hormones sending you into a tailspin? Are you struggling with your diet, blood sugar, cholesterol or weight? Each one of these are a key component to a healthy heart.

Stress is not all bad, such as: quick movement when in danger, nervousness when giving a speech, or having a first date or an interview. Usually these stresses are momentary, but stress that is chronic is damaging to one’s health and well-being.

Consider some of these well-known words regarding chronic stress:

“It is largely believed that the root cause of many chronic diseases is stress-induced free radicals and resultant oxidative injury.”

-Kaushal K. Srivastava and Ratan Kumar (Stress Managers)

“Be anxious for nothing but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

There are a number of tools to support healthy stress levels. Below are just a few to consider:

  1. Eating a Nourishing Diet

  2. Restful Sleep

  3. Prayer

  4. Meditation

  5. Mindful Quiet Time

  6. Breathing Exercises

  7. Laughter

  8. Regular Exercise, such as Pilates
