STRESS and Your Gut

Stress: A Major Inhibitor to Adequate Digestion

In a previous blog, it was outlined how stress can alter physiological functions of our body. This blog will specifically speak to effects of stress on your gut.

Stress & Gastrointestinal Activity

Stress can be a major causative factor to inadequate digestion. How does this happen? When in stress mode, the natural production of natural stomach acid, hydrochloric acid (HCL), (not to be confused with lactic acid) is shut down.

Why does this matter? Two very IMPORTANT reasons

1. HCL is needed to breakdown protein. Protein is needed as building materials for the rest of the body to do its job.

2. HCL is the body’s natural defense mechanism to kill off pathogens that enter our body with our food/beverages.

When HCL is not being produced it leaves food residue in the stomach to rot and allow pathogens (bacteria, bugs, parasites, fungus) to grow in your body. If left unaddressed can lead to a host of

unwanted symptoms such as:

gas, irregular bowels, gut flora imbalance IBS, colitis, skin disorders, parasitic infection, allergies, ulcers, h-pylori, dysbiosis, food sensitivities (gluten), hair loss, unhealthy nails, iron deficiency, joint/muscle aches, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, bone density disruption, compromised immune system, autoimmune

These unwanted health conditions, all trigger an immune response, if the immune system is operating at Mach 1 - 24/7 (which it is not designed to do), it’s going to wear out and/or not have enough juice to effectively douse other viruses (such as COVID), bacterial infections that come down the road.

Is your gut/body experiencing any of the above unwanted symptoms? In addition to checking and balancing your stress response below are some ways to support bringing balance back to your gut.
