The Sun & Sunscreen – What you put on your skin matters!

Many of us are becoming more intentional with our food choices – eating whole foods and reading food labels.  But have you also considered that what you put on your skin goes straight into your blood stream? Just like with the food you eat, you are either putting in nourishing substances or toxins.

Sun, Skin Cancer and Sunscreen With the scare of the “c” word: cancer, (particularly in this case, skin cancer) many are trying to do the right thing (which only makes sense) and lather bodies up with sunscreen.  But is sunscreen helping or hindering your health?  It is currently not conclusive that sunscreen is the primary prevention mechanism, for example: – According to the FDA, “Data fails to show that sunscreen use alone helps prevent premature skin aging and skin cancer.” – According to the National Cancer Institute, “No one knows the exact causes of melanoma.” A few of the unexplained findings: – Outdoor workers have a lower melanoma rate than indoor workers. – Melanoma rates are not related to cumulative exposure. – Recent research proposes that melanoma is initiated by intense UVB exposure while melanoma growth is promoted by UVA exposure and exacerbated by decreased vitamin D3 levels.

Sunscreen –  The Industry Sunscreen has become a money-making industry, which uses cheap (toxic) ingredients and mass production. The corporations aim for bigger profits and create products that can be detrimental to your health.  Remember what was said above: what goes on your skin, goes straight into your blood stream.

According to Dr. Mercola’s research, “The main chemical used in sunscreens to filter out ultraviolet B light is octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC). This chemical is a main ingredient in 90% of the sunscreens on the market. OMC was found to kill mouse cells even at low doses.” Here’s the kicker, OMC “was shown to be particularly toxic when exposed to sunshine.”!! Seriously!?

Here’s is a nice list of chemical ingredients to let you know if you should toss your sun screen.

  1. Para amino benzoic acid…

  2. Octyl salicyclate…

  3. Avobenzone…

  4. Oxybenzone…

  5. Cinoxate…

  6. Padimate O…

  7. Dioxybenzone…

  8. Phenylbenzimidazole…

  9. Homosalate…

  10. Sulisobenzone…

  11. Menthyl anthranilate…

  12. Trolamine salicyclate…

  13. Octocrylene…

The Sun is Your Friend Also we should not forget, the sun (in adequate exposure doses) is our friend and is needed for good health! How is this? – Sunlight is needed to naturally produce the most active form of Vitamin D –  D3 (which is necessary for good bone health). – Sunlight has shown to aid in reducing breast tumors by between 30% and 40%. – Sunlight has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. – Sunlight has helped with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. If nothing else catches your attention what about this National Geographic discovery: “Sunscreen chemicals are killing coral reefs around the world. Ingredients commonly found in popular brands of sunscreen – paraben, cinnamate, benzophenone, and a camphor derivative – are suspected of awakening dormant viruses in a certain algae that live inside coral reefs.”

Am I against sunscreen? The quick answer is NO, but how you “protect” yourself is what you should consider. #1 As indicated above, our bodies need sun daily in small exposures. #2 The healthiest way to have pure sun exposure is in short durations of 10 – 20 minutes, during midday to receiver higher amounts of UVB to generate Vitamin D3. #3 When you do apply sunscreen, choose a product that is not putting toxins into your body, but rather that is food for the skin.  There will be several non-toxic sun protection items available for you to learn about and sample at CoeDynamics’ upcoming Beauty and Body Care Open House. #4 And finally, The National Cancer Institute recommends protecting yourself from UV radiation with clothing, sunscreen lotions, minimizing time in the sun, and avoiding tanning booths.
