Pilates and Injury Rehabilitation

If you’ve ever gone to a physical therapy facility, you may have seen a reformer, a Pilates circle or another type of Pilates equipment there. Or if you’re a regular at our Manhattan Beach Pilates classes or take private sessions, you may have noticed a client come in to rehabilitate an injury.

Pilates isn’t just an incredible workout. Pilates benefits are wide-ranging—they include boosting flexibility to help prevent future injuries as well as helping to heal and strengthen injured parts of our bodies. In fact, when Joseph Pilates developed this movement in the early 20th century, it was originally designed as a method of rehabilitation. While it grew in popularity over the last 40 years, it was only in the last 15 years that its powerful therapeutic Pilates benefits have been recognized. Pilates instructors and physical therapists use it to treat an extensive range of injuries, as well as chronic illnesses such as osteoporosis.

One of the reasons why Pilates is so helpful for rehabbing injuries is that is can be tailored to each individual client’s needs. In addition, the core stabilization training it provides helps to develop a strong foundation for your body, while targeting weaker muscle groups that don’t get attention during other workouts such as weight lifting or cardiovascular training.

Pilates helps you correct your alignment and get your body in balance, which is helpful for treating injuries that stem from muscle imbalances that occur from the way we move, such as performing daily activities, exercise, sleep or simply walk. Taking Pilates classes will help you develop a more even musculature by strengthening the core, which helps you move correctly to avoid future injury and correct current ones.

Our Manhattan Beach Pilates classes are the perfect choice for everyone, whether you’re looking for a challenging workout or want to rehab an injury—or both.
